United Republic of Tanzania

Formed by the 1964 union of two sovereign states, Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Tanzania is an East African republic with a population of 44 million. Its under-five mortality rate is 122 for each 1,000 children born. The leading cause of death among Tanzanian children who survive the neonatal period is malaria, and for adults, HIV/AIDS. Other leading causes of death in infants and young children are pneumonia and diarrhea.
