Maternal and Child Health Initiative in Afghanistan

Bringing Health Care to the Women of Afghanistan

Up to 18,000 women in Afghanistan die each year for lack of basic health care services. The Afghan Institute of Learning, with support from the Abbott Fund and Direct Relief International, is addressing the challenge under the courageous leadership of a remarkable woman, Nobel Prize nominee Sakena Yacoobi. So far, AIL-trained nurse-midwives have given nearly 600,000 women and children a new chance at life.

Overview
Afghanistan has the highest risk of maternal mortality in the world – one in 11 women will die during childbirth. Meanwhile, one in four children will not live to see their fifth birthday. The Abbott Fund is working to improve the lives of Afghan women and children through a partnership with Direct Relief International and the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL). Founded by Nobel Prize nominee Sakena Yacoobi, a longtime advocate for women’s rights in Afghanistan, AIL has five clinics serving rural areas, each providing health services and education and staffed and operated by Afghan women. The partnership focuses on empowering these women by training midwives, as well as skilled health care providers for infants and children. Along with contributing our expertise, we’ve supported AIL with more than $4 million in product donations and nearly $600,000 in grants.
