Introducing Teens to Hands-On Engineering

The 2010 FIRST® Robotics Championship game, “Breakaway,” was played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. Teams form alliances with two other competitors, learning how to work together to overcome obstacles to win the challenge.

Overview
FIRST® Robotics Competition is designed to help high school students discover how interesting and rewarding the lives of engineers and researchers can be. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) challenges teams of young people and their mentors to build robots that solve a common problem, within a six-week period, using a standard kit of parts and abiding by a common set of rules. In 2009, the Abbott Fund sponsored five California high schools at a number of local and regional FIRST events and Abbott scientists and engineers served as mentors and coaches. Beginning this year, the Abbott Fund will expand sponsorship to new teams in the following Abbott communities: Northern California and Temecula, California; Lake County, Illinois; Columbus, Ohio; Santa Ana, California; Dallas, Texas; and Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, as well as the Sacramento Regional Competition. The Abbott Fund continues to support the FIRST Championship Competition, which was in St. Louis, Missouri, this spring.
